Diminished Family Thing

This tool is designed to help you explore Barry Harris' diminished chord genealogy. We can move one or two notes of a diminished chord to get other chords. Choose a chord voicing, and choose a string set. Then, move one or two notes to explore how diminished chords beget dominant chords, major 6 chords (which are also minor 7 chords), minor 6 chords (which are also minor7b5 chords), and dominant 7b5 chords. If you are prompted to reset the diminished chord, click one of the active buttons to reset the chord.

Settings:

  • Drop-Down Menu: Use this menu to select a chord voicing.

Buttons:

  • 6th String Button: Use this button to display a diminished chord with its lowest note on the 6th string.
  • 5th String Button: Use this button to display a diminished chord with its lowest note on the 5th string.
  • 4th String Button: Use this button to display a diminished chord with its lowest note on the 4th string. This button may be inactive if the selected chord voicing does not have an option with its lowest note on the 4th string.
