Feel your way around a shape.
The molded plastic surface has raised string and fret positions you can feel under your fingertips. Place your fingers lightly or press more firmly—there are no strings to hold down.
Slide it open to practice picking.
The flexible plastic picking section gives slightly as you move across it with a pick or your fingers. Repeat a picking pattern or work through a strumming movement.
Guitar Thing doesn’t produce musical notes. The picking section makes a soft plastic plucking sound, and its feel differs from guitar strings.
A few ways to spend a spare moment.
Take your time with a shape.
Hold a chord position. Look at the intervals. Think about what changes when you move a finger or add a note. Spend a little time with what’s under your fingers.
Keep your hands comfortably busy.
Sometimes it’s simply satisfying to run through familiar movements. Fidget with a shape or pattern, slide it closed, and slip it back into your pocket.

A few questions.
Is it useful if I’m just starting?
You can use it to rehearse the finger placement of a shape you’re learning. Bring a chord diagram or an exercise from your lessons—it doesn’t provide instructions on its own.
Does it feel like playing a guitar?
It gives you physical string and fret positions to work with, but it doesn’t reproduce guitar-string tension. Use it to rehearse shapes and movements; return to your guitar to hear the notes and work on how they sound.
Can I use it for fingerpicking?
Yes. Slide it open to repeat fingerpicking patterns on the flexible picking section. You can also use a pick.
